Phenoxyethanol (2-Phenoxyethanol) is a versatile, broad-spectrum antimicrobial preservative widely used in cosmetic, personal care, pharmaceutical and household formulations. It is a clear, colorless to slightly yellow oily liquid with good compatibility across a wide range of formulation systems and can also function as a solvent. It is particularly effective against bacteria and is commonly incorporated into creams, lotions, shampoos, conditioners, liquid soaps, facial cleansers, wet wipes and other water-based formulations. In cosmetic formulations, the maximum permitted concentration in the finished product under the EU Cosmetics Regulation is 1.0% when used as a preservative.
