Carbopol 940 is a high-efficiency, crosslinked acrylic acid polymer used primarily as a thickening, gelling, suspending and rheology-modifying agent in water-based formulations. It produces high viscosity and clear gels at relatively low use levels and is widely used in cosmetics, personal-care products, pharmaceutical preparations, hand sanitizers, gels, creams, lotions and other aqueous formulations. Carbopol 940 is supplied as a fine, white fluffy powder and develops its thickening effect when properly dispersed in water and neutralized. Lubrizol specifies Carbopol 940 NF as a Carbomer 940 polymer with a typical viscosity of 40,000–60,000 cP at 0.5% concentration after neutralization.
